The National Highway Visitors Safe practices Administration rolls out a new safe practices score process Tuesday -- 1 with far more rigorous standards.
"More stars equal safer cars," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a assertion.
"With our upgraded Five-Star Safe practices Rankings Program, we're raising the bar on safe practices. By means of new assessments, greater crash information, and larger standards, we're producing the safe practices rankings tougher and far more meaningful for buyers."
The safe practices rankings array from one to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the highest.
The company will release on Tuesday the rankings for the initial 2011-model-year automobiles evaluated under the brand new process -- 55 complete: 24 passenger cars, 20 SUVs, two vans and nine pickups.
"For more than 30 years, NHTSA's 5-star crash testing plan has been the gold normal for buyers searching to purchase the safest cars around the marketplace for their families," NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said in July when the brand new process was announced.
"Now, this great plan has gotten even greater by producing it less difficult to compare the safe practices efficiency of automobiles not merely in terms of crash survivability, but in terms of avoiding crashes in the very first location."
The new rankings will include an all round vehicle score, which combines the outcomes of a frontal crash check, side crash assessments and rollover resistance assessments. For the initial time, the check also will use female crash check dummies to similate problems that have an effect on women.
